Day 56 (August 15) – West Fork Toklat Glacier

We split the party into two groups this day. Rob, Timmy and Ben went to map the upper glacier, while the rest of us did some mapping below the glacier in the morning and some repeat photography later in the afternoon. While mapping on one of the lower medial moraines we noticed a group of five women backpackers crossing the river near our camp and heading up the valley to the west of us. Later after our nap time while doing our repeat photography assignment we noticed them coming back down the valley and pausing below us in an apparent state of confusion. At that point we decided we should climb down and invite them to set up their camp next to ours and join us for dinner. They explained that they were unable to get to where they had intended to be because they found the directions they had been given required traveling up an icy glacier that they weren’t prepared for.

Looks like they were consulting a map things were getting serious.
